FPV (First-Person View) Drone Flying Course: Cutting Through the Conventional

INSPIRE Education

Experience the Thrill of First-Person View Racing

Following the success of an earlier aerial photography workshop, INSPIRE returned to Shek Lei Catholic Secondary School to bring students an electrifying FPV (First-Person View) drone flying course. Where traditional drone photography focuses on capturing stunning landscapes from above, FPV flying is about immediacy, speed, and precision. By wearing FPV goggles, students experienced what it feels like to sit inside the drone's cockpit — navigating through complex environments from a perspective unlike anything else.

"Experience First, Learn Second"

True to our core teaching philosophy, this workshop reduced the lecture component and emphasised immediate hands-on exploration. Under instructor guidance, students moved quickly from understanding the basic mechanics of small unmanned aircraft (SUAs) into real flight control.

The course focused on several key technical areas:

  • FPV Drone Technology: An accessible deep-dive into FPV drone hardware, and a comparison of analogue vs. digital signal systems.
  • Immersive Navigation: Using FPV goggles to develop spatial awareness and depth perception in real-time flight.
  • Multiple Control Modes: Students practised with both traditional remote controllers and motion controllers, discovering their preferred flying style.
  • Precision Manoeuvring: Navigating through custom-designed obstacle courses to develop the fine motor skills demanded by high-speed flying.
  • Safety and Regulations: An in-depth look at the Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) Ordinance (Cap. 448G) and CAD guidelines, ensuring every student can fly responsibly and legally.

Developing the Next Generation of Technology Leaders

At INSPIRE, we believe holistic development means giving students new lenses through which to see the world. By mastering FPV technology, Shek Lei students were not just "playing with toys" — they were engaging with the hardware and software foundations of a rapidly growing low-altitude economy.

From real-time video transmission to the aerodynamics of brushless motors, every flight session was a live application of STEM principles. The resilience students demonstrated left a deep impression — embracing the challenges of task-based learning, refining their technique after every session to conquer increasingly difficult obstacles.
