2024 PLK Ngan Po Ling College — Tello Drone Experience Course

INSPIRE instructors visited PLK Ngan Po Ling College this time to deliver a three-hour drone experience course. The session focused on giving students a preliminary understanding of small drone control and drone programming within a limited time frame.

During the course, students first learned about drone technology and related STEM knowledge, such as drone construction, flight principles, and motor systems. They then familiarised themselves with the safety protocols and Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (CAD) regulations required when flying drones, to avoid any dangers or regulatory violations such as flying in restricted zones or exceeding altitude limits.

After understanding the basics and relevant regulations, students practised manual control of small drones indoors under the supervision of instructors and teaching assistants. Using the Tello EDU, they completed simple flight tasks to become familiar with the controller operations.

After trying manual control, students moved on to drone programming. Still centred on the Tello series, students used the Tello EDU app to program flight commands, connecting to drones via WiFi for both 'one-to-one' and 'one-to-many' flight modes, enabling drones to autonomously complete designated flight tasks. This course quickly built a solid foundation so that students interested in aerial photography could continue exploring the subject based on what they learned.
